I feel a little guilty that my little business is taking up most of our home. We live in a ’70s ranch (gratefully with a full basement)….but mama is now taking up two rooms downstairs–one for the office, one for storage.
We decided to move the guest room upstairs and move the boys in together. Chris and I both shared a room growing up, so we thought what could it hurt to try? It’s not like the house is really quiet with them in two rooms. So far, I think it was a good decision.
I already had their zinc “L” and “W”, so there isn’t a better placement for those than right over their little heads.
The twin beds are Craigslist finds (and can be built up as bunks, too). The stain they used for the beds just couldn’t be worked around–white dove was the only solution.
The reversible stripe/ gingham bedding is from IKEA. (With boys these things live in the washer, so not spending a ton is fine by me.)
And not only is my oldest starting kindergarten soon, but he also is following in his blind mama’s footsteps. I sooo wish he had his papa’s eyes! Chris doesn’t even need glasses, but he has begun wearing some so Liam will feel better. How sweet is he?!
If you have kids, do they share? Am I crazy?
Hope you have a great week…
Julie

There is nothing sweeter to me then a room with twin beds. I love the large zinc letters too!
My girls shared a bedroom for quite a few years when they were young. They had two single beds as well, until they decided they wanted bunk beds. They wanted a twin up double down so who ever had a sleep over would get the bottom bunk with their friend…….well, that never happened, my oldest had the bottom bunk and would never give it up for her younger sister. Oh well, we worked things out, but they insisted they wanted to continue sharing a room, until just before my oldest daughter’s 13th birthday, so they now have separate rooms, and we split the bunks, one girl has the double and their brother took the single, as he just recently grew out of his race car bed. Most of the time it was a great thing with the two of them sharing. Most of the time, lol…..
My boys, 7 and almost 11, have shared a room since Day 1 … and we have a 4-bedroom house! My pediatrician loves the fact they share a room. I have no idea why.
They don’t complain about it and miss each other when someone’s away overnight. In short, I don’t think you’re crazy at all!
I shared a room with my older sister when I was young, and I think I turned out okay. They’ll be fine!
I am expecting our second baby this summer and we plan to always have our children share a room. I loved sharing a room with my sister growing up and I think it’s good for kids to learn how to share and live together!
Darling room, love it!
I didn’t share a room growing up, but wish I had!!! Sure, there were some benefits to having my own space, but although my sister and I were close, not sharing a room gave us reasons to be apart. I think it would’ve been really fun to stay with her! Plus, I think I would’ve learned to share better having to share that space. It’s good practice for the future – they’ll always be living with someone – brother now, college roomate, spouse one day
I shared with my sister – hated it then – good memories now! Love twin beds in any bedroom. His glasses rock. My daughter has been wearing them since she was three – they are part of who she is now.
Not crazy at all! My son and daughter have shared a room for the past 4 years…he is now almost 10 and she is 6 1/2! I am sure we are approaching the time to move him to his own room and put our youngest daughter in with her big sister soon! I have found it has taught them how to respect each other a little more, love each other a little more and to remind them that we need to share what we have been blessed with. A testament to this…my almost 10 year old is in no hurry to have his own room…he says he will miss having his sister around
Great rug…. Is it West Elm or Ballard? Love the zinc letters too- where might I find them….
The rug is West Elm and the letters from Ballard years ago. Anthro has some!
Yes, mine share rooms and I love when I walk past their rooms and they are deep into a conversation. Growing up I shared my room with my three sisters! It was like a big dorm room and boy did we have fun.
P.S. Love the bedroom!
Thanks
great post, no my kids never shared– no need in my too big house but they couldn’t wait to share their rooms at camp and college! both of mine started wearing glasses at a young age and also went into contacts really soon.. contacts have just become a part of their routine !
Great room…where did you find the letters? I’ve been looking for something that size (an L too) and haven’t had much luck.
I found them at Ballard’s Backroom about 3 years ago. Anthro has some for around $90 each.
My boys, ages 5 and 3, have shared a room ever since my younger one was out of a crib at 2 and a half. They LOVE it!!! And so do I. It is so sweet to hear them talk to each other and really bond. And now, the old nursery, has become a little upstairs tv rom for us all to be together and watch movies!
I had to share a room with with my step sister for a while and it is not easy.Love the Big letters on the wall and the mix of brown ,blues and pink seems to work in well.Looks like a peaceful room.
With 5 kids and a small 4 bedroom house there is no choice but to share. Two sets of kids share and while it can be a challenge because of all the age differences and not enough room we don’t apologize for having to do it. Long after they have outgrown the toys, they will always have each other.

Funny enough, my two youngest have shared a room since they were in cribs (they are 18 months apart, boy and girl). We bought a new house so each of our 4 children could have their own rooms and wouldn’t have to share. Since we moved in (almost 2 years now), the youngest 2 continue to sleep in the same room nightly. They take turns sleeping in my 6 year old son’s room and then back to my 5 year old daughter’s room. I decided that this summer, I putting a set of twin beds in both rooms, because as of now, one’s in the bed and one’s on the floor, although he swears he loves sleeping on the floor! Funny kids!
We have two young ones (sounds like our are similar in age to yours: 5 and 3.) They share a room, as well. The difference is that ours are girl/boy. We get lots of mixed reactions about our decision to have them share a room, but we feel like it’s a good decision for our family for this time in our lives… I love your boys’ room!
I’m thinking of doing letters above the beds in our kids’ room, too. Just not sure how it’ll work/look with bunks.
Hi Julie-
I really like the finish on the pieces of furniture you paint, like the beds in this post. Are they semi-gloss and do you spray them with a paint sprayer or do you use a brush?
Thanks so much!
Rachel
Hey! My talented husband did this. I’m not a good painter. Yes, just semi gloss, a brush, and patience.
on the off chance that you are still checking comments on this (haha its not like you are busy or anything! jk) how are your boys doing with the shared room.
I loved sharing a room with my sis, and I am considering moving my sons into the same room. They wake each other up from separate rooms anyway, haha!
The room looks really cute!
