This post is for my own reference–blogs are a good place for someone like me to keep track of things–and also for you if you wish. By the way, do you know that Europeans call it “splashback”? Don’t tell me I never taught ya anything :)
Here is one of my favorites: metal tiles. We may be using these for a client’s kitchen reno next month. Isn’t Kay Douglas genius? (House Beautiful 2007)
Another option that can look cheesy or gorgeous–bricks. In this instance: gorgeous. MODgirl’s design. (Her home will be in Southern Living this summer)
Classic and ubiquitous subway tiles (here in Anisa’s kitchen) I don’t think you can go wrong with these. Sure, a lot of people use them, but sometimes things are popular because they are just good.
And here they are from Cottage Living 2007. My all-time favorite kitchen and what I based our hidden vent hood upon (and our plate shelf!)
Okay, more ceramic tiles. Here is our kitchen:
I love saving money on some finishes so you can buy “fancy” Walker Zanger or Ann Sacks–worth every penny!
Colorful glass tiles (coastal living):
Up next: horizontal (or vertical) boards. People use all types of wood and paint (or no paint). I love this former living room turned kitchen (House Beautiful July 2010)

One of my favorites: NO backsplash. I think about my grandmother’s kitchen. I am sure she can cook a tornado around most of us, and she never had a backsplash. Sure, we wipe down her walls after cooking a big Christmas dinner, but they look fine after soap and water. Yes, tiles are cleaner and shinier, but are they a necessity? (Nancy Fichelson)
I don’t really see a backsplash from the kitchen of It’s Complicated….do you see one? What an amazing, soulful kitchen!
Hey, why don’t y’all join in and send me a picture of your backsplash (or lack thereof)? I will post a Part II–still so many more options (marble, granite, tin, beadboard…).
Have a great Monday……..Julie

check out pinterest.com. you can thank me later:) warning: totally addictive.
Love your “splashback”! I book marked Abode Love’s kitchen just the other day because I fell for the Morrocan inspired tiles. Yours is just lovely!
There are so many beautiful options to choose from. I have actually had wallpaper as my backsplash. The way the cupboards were hung it just made the best sense to me. Cleans up really easily. Your backsplash is beautiful and I also love the subway and metal tiles.
I have the ubiquitous subway tile in hand-glazed caramel color. I need at least 5 kitchens so I can have different “splashbacks” . . . I don’t think that will happen but a girl can dream!
I don’t have one in my kitchen right now actually. I do want one though because my husband is a messy cook and stuff does NOT wipe off no matter how hard I try! In my bathroom though I did opt out of the backsplash over the sinks and I’m soooo glad I did! It looks so much more modern, almost like the sink is a piece of furniture and it never really gets dirty or wet! In the future kitchen though I would love to do small glass tiles, probably in a barely there color like green or blue.
Love the planking as the backsplash. I don’t know what to do in our new house… it’s one of the things that I have yet to decide. We are going with white marble countertops and white cabinets. Probably antique or unlacquered bronze hardware. But I just can’t make up my mind on the backsplash!
The metal tiles are fantastic! And Modgirl’s kitchen is great too! Can’t wait to see her feature in SL – they actually used my pillows for the shoot:) So exciting!
They Europeans are way more chic then us
They also call bangs, fringe….so much better!
Julie- your tiles are still my favorite! I talked about you today and said thank you.
. xo, abby
I LOVE your backsplash! It makes such a statement, but is so timeless. The perfect combo! =)
These are all great! So many choices, that’s what makes picking a backsplash so fun! Sent a pic of my backsplash to your email!!
I’m such a fan of subway tile and wood backsplashes…casual and classic. Adore your kitchen!!
Great tinhnkig! That really breaks the mold!
Love this post! I have been thinking of doing a bead board backsplash in my new kitchen. Bead board or subway tiles? I’m thinking the larger planks look better than small. That’s my new project for the summer

I HAVE to know where you got the white quadtrefoil tiles for your backsplash, please, do tell =)
